When the clock struck 11:00 AM on July 12th, 2024, The Meeting Point in Abuja transformed into the epicenter of entrepreneurial brilliance. The Boma Prize Semi-Final wasn’t just another event—it was a launchpad, a transformative experience, and a testament to the innovation surging across Africa. Here’s a deep dive into the day that redefined possibilities and set the stage for the grand finale.
This platform gave me a paradigm shift in my business. I’ve had massive growth in my business (barely less than two weeks) just by listening to other contestants, getting advice from the judges, and preparing for this competition. It was my first time and certainly not my last.” – Favikita Aura, Makeup Artist Entrepreneur.
Boma Prize Semi-Final: A Day of Innovation, Inspiration, and Impact
The day kicked off with the Nigerian National Anthem—a stirring prelude to what was to come. Our Brand Manager, Ms. Faith Adeyanju, welcomed everyone with a blend of warmth and professionalism that set the perfect tone. Her call to action was clear: Engage, learn, and make this event unforgettable. And boy, did we!.
The Keynote Kickoff: Words of Wisdom
Isaac Olugbenga, our Project Manager, took to the stage with a keynote that was part pep talk, part reality check. He painted a vivid picture of the Boma Prize’s journey, from its inception to the colossal impact it’s having. The crowd was hooked as he spoke about the milestones we’ve achieved and the game-changing potential of the competition.
Pitch Perfect: The Main Event
The real magic happened during the pitch sessions. The 20 participants, split into two groups, took turns to dazzle us with their ideas. Each pitch was a masterclass in innovation and perseverance. With 10 minutes on the clock, contestants had to make their case—7 minutes of presentation followed by a 3-minute Q&A with our formidable judges. The air was thick with anticipation as each entrepreneur laid their vision bare.
Panel Power: Insights Galore
If you thought the pitches were intense, the panel discussion was a whole different ballgame. Our panelists—Ms. Ijeoma Seraphie, Mr. Felix Ohaeri, and Mr. Jedidiah Daniel—took us through the intricacies of branding and marketing in Africa. Their insights were like a masterclass in a box. Moderated by the ever-engaging Cameragirl, the discussion explored how effective marketing strategies can drive brand success and how non-profits can make a significant impact.
Networking Nirvana: Connections Made
One of the day’s highlights was the networking opportunities. Hosted by Real Warri Pikin, Uncle Ses, and Cameragirl, this was more than just a chance to mingle—it was where magic happened. Attendees networked, learned from each other, and even got to ask burning questions to the judges and guest speakers. The buzz was palpable, and it was clear that new collaborations were just around the corner.
Celebrating Our Standout Stars
A special shoutout is for our participants and volunteers. The pitches were not only organized but also delivered with exceptional flair. Valentine Nnamani from OneGrid Energies stole the show with his renewable energy solution, clinching the N100,000 GIG Mobility Award for Innovation. And our volunteers? They were the unsung heroes, ensuring everything ran like a well-oiled machine.
The Press and Publicity
The event didn’t just end with applause; it made waves. With coverage from Arise TV, TVC, and more, the semi-final got the spotlight it deserved. The interviews and live coverage are now available on YouTube, showcasing the event’s success and the transformative potential of the Boma Prize.
What’s Next?
As we gear up for the finals, our 14 finalists are about to embark on an intensive 2-month accelerator program. Starting August 1st, these entrepreneurs will refine their business ideas with the help of mentors, culminating in the final pitch in Accra, Ghana.
A Heartfelt Thanks
None of this would have been possible without the visionary leadership of Ms. Blessing Douglas, CEO of Boma Prize. Her dedication and passion for nurturing African entrepreneurship were evident throughout the event.
